Eligibility:

All undergraduate students of all levels of the Collegeof Engineering are eligible for participation. Engineering undergraduates can join any research group in the College of Engineering or in any other USF division outside the College of Engineering at USF (for example in departments such as Chemistry, Physics, or the Center for Ocean Technology or the Moffitt Cancer Center). Underrepresented groups students are especially encouraged to apply.

Steps to Receive an Engineering Undergraduate Research Fellowship:

  1. Find a Faculty Mentor who agrees to hire you. The first step of this process is to determine what you are interested in. Please, visit the “Research” page where all participating research groups of the College are listed with short summaries of their research projects. The COE-REU Coordinators (see “Contact” page for a list of the Coordinators) in the departments can assist you with this process. Once you know which groups interest you, make appointments with the professors and meet them for an interview.
  2. Once you find a professor who agrees to hire you, start volunteering in the professor’s laboratory. No paperwork needs to be submitted during this period. Alternatively, you can take a Undergraduate Research course offered by several departments. More info about these courses is given on the “Fellowships” page.
  3. After successfully volunteering for some time, you are ready to become a member of the COE-REU program.
  4. Sign-up procedure:
Fill in an application form (Word document) together with your advisor. Then give the form to the REU Coordinator of your advisor's department. Please, note that the final approval of your enrollment will be made based on the availability of funds.
  5. Deliverables: All COE-REU funded students are required to submit the following deliverables by the Friday following the finals week of each semester (resp. the Friday before fall classes begin in summer):
    1) Scientific report about activities during the preceding semester/summer
    2) Three presentation-style powerpoint slides summarizing activities (make sure you include nice figures and descriptive bullets).
    3) At least one picture in JPG format (min 1024x768 resolution).

Please, use the report and slides templates posted here: Report, slides.

Reports and slides will be posted on the COE-REU website (if approved by your advisor)

Please, visit the deliverables page for more details about the submission process.

Please, be aware that incomplete submission of deliverables will lead to discontinuation of your COE-REU appointment in the following semester.
