Deliverables

All participating students are required to produce the deliverables listed below after each semester/summer of participation.
If a student joined the program during the current semester, the following rules apply to determine whether to submit deliverables or not:

Fall: All students on payroll before October, 13th need to submit.
Spring: All students on payroll before March, 1st need to submit.
Summer: All students on payroll before July, 1st need to submit.

Due dates: One week after the finals week, or at the end of the second week of the Fall semester.

The deliverables should mainly cover your activities during the semester after which they are submitted.

Deliverables:

  1. Scientific report (should be written like a manuscript for a peer reviewed journal) about your activities during the semester. It is mandatory to use the Word cover sheet (download here) as page one for your report. There are no page limits/requirements. The only requirement is the approval of your advisor. The report must be submitted as MS Word document.
  2. Three PowerPoint slides summarizing your work. It is mandatory to use the PowerPoint template (download here) as cover page for the slides. Please, also have the slides approved by your advisor before submitting. The slides must be submitted as one MS PowerPoint file. No other formats can be accepted.
  3. One digital photograph (must be in JPG format and better than 640 x 400 pixel resolution) showing yourself "in action", i.e. in your lab with your equipment or computer etc.… Submit also a short byline indicating what you are doing/what equipment is shown on the picture.
All three items will be posted on the REU website under your name with indication of your group and advisor, unless your advisor asks us not to post them (there might be intellectual property issues etc...).
Again, please, make sure to ask your advisor for approval of the submitted documents before submission.

Some advice if your files are getting very big (>1-2Mb): This usually occurs if you directly copy/paste RGB figures/pictures into your reports/powerpoint files. It is usually better to save the images/figures as JPG files at a medium compression rate. This dramatically reduces the sizes of the images/figures. Then insert them into your deliverables using the "insert"/"from file" menu command in Word or Powerpoint. That way you will end up with compact files that can easily be emailed (and posted on the web site).

Submission Process:

All CoE-REU participating students on payroll are enrolled in a Blackboard "Organization" (similar to a course) called "College Of Engineering REU". All three deliverables are to be submitted through this Blackboard Organization. To access, point your browser to "my.usf.edu", log on with your user ID and password, click on the "Organizations" tab, select "College Of Engineering REU", then select "Deliverables" on the left side. Once on the deliverables page, read the instructions and submit the files. If you cannot see the REU organization in your Blackboard set-up, contact your REU Coordinator. Contact the Blackboard helpdesk if you have technical questions regarding the submission process. Contact your departmental REU Coordinators if you have questions regarding content of the deliverables.

It is mandatory to use the following file name convention:

Report: <LastnameFirstnameSemester>Rep.doc
Slides: <LastnameFirstnameSemester>Sld.ppt
Photo: <LastnameFirstnameSemester>Pht.jpg

Use "SU" for Summer, "FA" for Fall, "SP" for Spring followed by the year in two digits, i.e. Summer 2004 is "SU04"

Examples:
" DoeJaneSU04Rep.doc"
"DoeJohnFA04Sld.ppt"

Please note that the report also needs to be submitted in paper (Adress to Catherine High in the Dean's office, ENB118 or deliver in person) with an original signature of your advisor on the cover page.

The deliverables serve the following purposes:
  1. It is a good practice for you to start writing scientific reports and make slides about your work. These skills are crucial for any advanced career as scientist or engineer. It is also a good practice for writing a Thesis.
  2. Posting the documents on the REU website will enable your fellow students to see what research is going on in the College, and hopefully motivate them to participate in the REU program.
  3. The deliverables will demonstrate the impressive scope of your work and create a record of our achievements, justifying the funds we/you have received from the Vice President of Research, Ian Phillips, and our Dean Louis Martin-Vega.
